A hybrid golf club is a type of club that can be used to play shots from the fairway or rough. This type of club is designed to combine the distance of a fairway wood with the accuracy and control of an iron.
It was originally created to give players more options when they were in difficult situations, such as near trees or on tight lies. You may have seen these clubs before, but you might not know what they are called!
What kind of hybrid golf clubs are there?
There are hybrid golf clubs for almost all irons out there, but they’re typically designed to be an alternative to longer irons such as the 1, 2, 3 or 4.
Here are the loft equivalents for hybrid golf clubs:
- 1 Iron: 14-16 degrees of loft
- 2 Iron: 17-19 degrees of loft
- 3 Iron: 20-21 degrees of loft
- 4 Iron: 22-23 degrees of loft
- 5 Iron: 24-27 degrees of loft
- 6 Iron: 29-32 degrees of loft
And for shaft length, they’re slightly longer than your normal iron, ranging anywhere from 38-41 inches depending on which hybrid you’re using.
Who should be using hybrid golf clubs?
Since hybrids are a combination of fairway woods and irons, they’re a great option for any golfer to have in their bag.
In fact, more than half of the professionals on the PGA Tour carry at least one hybrid, meaning they’re not only for high handicap golfers.
So if you struggle with your long irons or fairway woods, a hybrid is a solid club to have in your bag since they give you the length of a fairway wood with the accuracy of an iron.
When to use a hybrid golf club
When you’re playing from a difficult spot, like near trees or in the rough, it can be tough to get the ball up into the air. That’s where hybrids come in handy! Their design makes them perfect for hitting shots out of the rough, and they’re much easier to hit than a long iron.
Simply put, hybrids are the best of both worlds when it comes to fairway woods and long irons – they’re accurate, without sacrificing the distance.
So whenever you’re considering hitting a long iron or fairway wood, it’s worth giving your hybrid a consideration.
How to hit a hybrid golf club
To hit a hybrid, you’ll want to take a similar swing as you would an iron, hitting down on the ball and taking a divot behind the ball.
For a normal hybrid shot, it’s recommended that you play the ball in the middle of your stance, and keep your weight centered.
If you’re hitting a hybrid off a tee, you’ll want to line the ball slightly up in your stance, the same as you would a fairway wood!
Remember to swing down when hitting the ball, since that will give you the best results possible.
Hybrid Golf Clubs are a great option for golfers who struggle with their long irons and/or fairway woods.
Since they’re focused on distance and accuracy, you should give them a try if you aren’t performing well with those clubs.
It will take a little while to get used to the feel of them, but once you do, you’ll be happy you decided to take the plunge and buy that hybrid!
